Help. What should I use to clean out my Lab's ears? I keep wiping them out with warm water but they come back with a vengeance and it really smells BAD! He's a big boy and I try to avoid dragging him in to the vet for a minor problem like this.
I work for a vet and ear mites are quite rare in dogs.
What you want to do is get a bottle of ear drying solution from your vet and clean your dogs ears out thoroughly with the solution, then use the same solution once a week as a preventative.
If you suspect a medical problem with his ears and do not want to take your dog to the vets office, take a cotton swab and get a sample of the dogs ear contents, and take that to your vet so he can examine it. If he has a yeast or bacterial infection your vet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> then can prescribe an antibiotic for him. The ear drying solution is also used in conjunction with the antibiotic.
I will agree that it sounds like yeasty ears. If this is left untreated long enough it can effect the dog's hearing, so I wouldn't consider it a minor problem. Dogs can also get ear hematomas from shaking their heads too much because their ears bother them (the surgery to fix it and the meds for the underlying problem will cost a whole lot more than a vet visit now) If you don't want to take the dog in for some reason, at least take in a swab of the ear (great suggestion) and get some ear cleaner. The water is doing more harm than good.

This is from a mother who raised two daughters on swim team and has a GSD that likes to swim -- a simple solution of alcohol and white vinegar 50:50 does wonders for routine cleaning and fugus prevention.
Just remember not to stick anything down a dogs ears (a gauze or washcloth is good for cleaning of what you can see) I just fill the ear canals, massage, and wipe off the residue.
Usually after the ears got wet inside or if they look "nummy" or he starts twitching his ears.
Hey, Thanks to all for the good advice. I just assumed it was mites. We're military living in Okinawa-VERY humid! What is the cause of a yeast ear infection? I'm not anti-vet, just being practical. The ear swab sounds like a great idea.
