Today I noticed my dog's horny nail was twisted, bleeding and cracked. I took him to the vet and he told me the my dog needed to be sedated and the nail cut and cutarized. Is this what most vet's would do? We also asked the vet if we can stay and watch the procedure. The vet told us due to insurance reasons, we were not allowed to enter the hospital area to view the procedure. Is this the policy of most vets?
Mine shattered one completely once. Vet sedated him, cut and peeled off the shattered hard nail, leaving only a small pink "finger" of sensitive tissue. Wrapped it for a few days, and it healed nicely. But I don't use vets who won't let me handle my own dog and stay with them thru procedures.
I agree about the vet not letting you stay. My previous vet started doing vaccinations in the back room, said it was easier when the dog was not around it's owner. Wouldn't change their minds so I went somewhere else. I have one who can be not so nice if I'm not there to tell him to behave, don't think that alone in the backroom is such a good idea.
My new vet allows me to observe the procedures and restrain my own dog, and even gives me a 20% discount for having too many dogs!
my dog had a split dewclaw (both sides split all the way up the nail and into the base). the vet recommended cutting off the entire nail, quick and all.
I didn't like that idea, so I just slopped some nail polish on it and wrapped it up to prevent further damage, and it eventually grew out perfectly fine. I was surprised how well it turned out, but depending how severe it is that might not work.
Nope, I would say it is not normal at least not the vets I have run into. I would say find another vet-personally I would question why they couldn't allow me back there and insurance reasons just wouldn't cut it-god only knows what they are doing in that mysterious back room-if they can't do a simple procedure like that (in comparison to a spay/neuter etc.) in front of me-the dog doesn't go back. I am as protective over my GSD as I am my child. Hope your dog is okay

I got my dog back from the vet 2 hrs afterwards. He still seems playful and happy. The vet bandaged the area where they cut the nail. The vet told me to bring my dog back so the bandage can be removed and if the bandage comes off by itself, theres no need to bring the dog back. The vet prescribed a 10 day supply of antibotics. He also told me to watch for any bleeding/swelling. When I got up this morning, I noticed he had been trying to chew the bandage off. I think i may be looking for a vet that allows the viewing of simple procedures like the one my dog went thru. I would like to see what they are doing/how they are treating him in the future.
Good for you, but one question why did the vet have him for 2 hrs???? That seems a bit long to me but then I am not a vet, glad to hear your dog is doing better! Good luck and I bet the bandage won't make it another hour

The vet told me it would take about 2 hrs because the dog needed to be sedated and it would take some time for the dog to be sedated and to come out of being sedated.
