my six month GSD has recently learned the joy of swimming, and i take him to play in the pool (i don't have easy access to a lake) a few times a week for exercise.
today, however, i noticed he was a little bit gimpy and upon inspection saw that the pads on his back feet had a couple of raw spots. i didn't see him slip or anything, but i'm assuming he must have skinned them jumping in or something.
anyway, besides taking it easy for a few days (maybe only playing and exercising on grass) what can i do to help them heal quickly? any products out there that are durable enough to stay on a puppy's paw? and how do you prevent something like this?
There is a few different things you can add. Straight up petroleum jelly, bag balm, (for cows, it is in a green can but they sell it for everything-even diaper rash)lotion, maybe a little Bacitracin once in a while to boost the healing time....just be careful! in how much you add and rub it in really good so he can lick it off!!! All of these would loosen him up real nice for ya and I don't think you need or want that . Watch them so they don't get larger or infected. Keep the clean and they should heal up real quick. Good luck and enjoy the summer with your baby

Happy Jack Pad Kote (Jeffers has it) - Just make sure to let it dry before letting the dog walk around on your floors as it stains BAD! Your dogs pads might be getting scuffed up if the water is softening them up and then he is doing any turning sliding or stopping motions etc. You can also try a zinc supplement to help toughen feet, too.
