Ok question.....I have a GSD I am training in Schutzhund and I am trying to train the same as on the DVD (drive, focus, grip). I know a lot of people that have hunting dogs and would like to try training like this in drive.
Now my question is will using the tug and ball like in the DVD effect the hunting dogs grip. For instance will their grip become harder and will they start to squish the bird when they are retrieving the bird. Or because they have been breed to have a soft mouth it won't affect the bite
We've got a yellow lab and a Chesapeake Bay retriever in our Schutzhund club and I think the Chessie also does field trials and maybe the lab does too. I'll ask them tomorrow at practice, but I suspect that they will only really try to squish the bird if you don't teach them to out or drop it and you try to wrestle the bird away from them like you would with the tug or ball. I'm a total Schutzhund beginner with only a month of training so someone can totally correct me, but it seems like once the dog has the tug or sleeve in its mouth when it wins, it doesn't really chomp on it much when it is carrying it.

I did not think it would effect their bite, but I don't want to give them wrong info. I know a mal that goes to hunt trials and the pheasants come back flat So I just want to be sure.
If you train just like in the DVD, the dog will grip tightly as the DVD instructs to teach the dog that if it holds with a soft mouth, it will loose the tug.
The game can be altered slightly so the dog learns to be confident and carry with a soft grip. As far as I know the dog doesn't have to fight with the duck, so teaching the dog to tug and fight for a tug or dummy may not be the most useful. Definitely the into my arms and running in a circle with the dog will teach a calm confident grip - just don't rip the ball out of the dog's mouth when the grip is soft to teach a hard grip.
Using a larger ball or dummy also encourages a soft grip in some dogs.
