I need some help here before my husband goes bonkers.
One of my shepherds has an injury and is on rest (allowed a short walk per day for now).
My second GS needs more exercise and I will either walk/jog her seperately or play ball/frisbee with her in the yard. Unfortunately my first dog knows what is going on (even when inside crated) and freaks out. Meaning he barks/howls/whines/panics (throws a jealous hissy fit). I've tried correcting him with a prong (but to do this he can't be crated) and/or giving him a stern no and a pop under the chin. Either way I still have to come upstairs and inside and he's happy that he got my attention.
So now I've moved on to ignoring him but the neighbours don't care for this move and neither does my husband.
My concern is that he's got surgery coming up in a week and so will be on complete rest for some time.
I need your help and any good advice is appreciated.
is it possible for the husband to take injured dog out for his short walk while you exercise the healthy one ?
or , could you take healthy dog out and away from the family home for his exercise while husband engages injured dog in some light form of entertainment ?
great points there! I can get him to down/stay no problem it is the "quiet" that I am at a loss with. No level of correction seems to work at all. I would not like to resort to putting him in the basement to holler away as he isn't learning a thing. My goal (and I have all the time in the world for this) is to be able work with either of my dogs while the other one watches near by in a relaxed state of mind.
My second dog responds instantly to "quiet" and doesn't make a peep while my older guy does not stop with the noise. What do you do to obtain "quiet"????
well , in my experience you can't expect a positive response to a command the dog doesn't know .
i don't know if you have done this , but my first step was to teach the dog how to "speak" , and then conversely , how to be "quiet" .
that way , you are developing two commands that you can praise and reward , rather than losing your cool trying to get your dog to shut the %$#@ up ! see what i mean ?
