I'm new to the forum. I have a 6 year old GSD who has become very aggressive toward small dogs.
Long story short obedience training, clicker training, and prong collar have worked for everything else, but her brain just seems to snap with small dogs--she becomes like a dog I don't recognize. I can't give a level of correction that seems to have an impact.
I have a few questions:
I am planning to get the electronic collar video and go that route. Will the training video be sufficient or would it be better to hire someone to work with me? I am very studious but am a pet owner and this is only my second GSD. (We have done basic training together, I have done lots of reading on the subject, and I have read the applicable parts of this web site.)
Second, could someone recommend e-collar brands that you respect? Any better for the novice user?
Fourth, any words of encouragement or stories of success? I'm feeling pretty bummed out.
Jennifer - I would be using the remote collar. I use a DOGTRA 1700 on my personal dog http://leerburg.com/1700.htm
It's important to set up the foundation correctly. The DVD explains in detail how to do this. http://leerburg.com/318.htm
My advice wouyld be to get the DVD - do the foundation work. Then add the collar to your training and see if you need further help. Odds are you are not going to.
When done properly the collar will stop dog aggression. You will always have to have the dog wear the collar when you go for walks. But I compare this to a police K9 handler who puts the collar on his patrol dog every time he goes to work.
The fact is you will never take this hate out of your dog - you will teach it that that behavior is inapprpriate and should not be exhibited.
PS: When you have a minute - please go to your personal file and add a space between your first and last name - here is a page that explains how http://leerburg.com/changename.htm
