I have 2 young dobermans (female 2 yrs 3 mos and male 1 yr). Both have had obedience training and will walk well in a heel alone, but tend to drift forward on me when I walk them together. I have 2 prong collars with different size links although I don't know the exact guages. I've tried both collars and both dogs and consistently get much better responsiveness with minor corrections with the smaller link when I walk them alone or together so I want to replace the larger link collar. I use a choke chain coupled with the prong collar for security so I don't think I really need the "strength" of a heavy guage. Since they have such short fur, I also prefer the look of less metal hanging around their necks so I'd like to use the smallest guage possible. Can you get Micro-prong collars for larger dogs? If so, is it a good idea?
Just a suggestion: Dobie Rescue recommends the 3.25 mm large (heavy duty) prong collar -- I believe the reason for that size is because, the smaller the prongs are, the more there are of them on the collar, and the greater the impact of the correction (the micro prong may LOOK more elegant, but the result might NOT be what you want)...
I've only had personal experience using the large gauge prong on a Doberman -- I'm just passing along this info from Dobie Rescue's website <:-)
Thanks. The problem I've found with the larger prong is that I have to give more frequent and much firmer corrections to get the right reaction. Its like the power steering gets turned on with the smaller prongs so they are on a loose leash much more of the time which makes for a much more enjoyable walk.
You could buy 1 micro prong & order a LOT of extra links to make it long enough to fit your dog -- If it works great, get another one, but if it's a disaster, sell the collar to someone with a Yorkie <:-)
I used the micro prong with about 9 extra links on a dobie mix. I tied the dog out on a leash to take photos. She bolted after a feral cat and broke the leash, but the collar was in perfect shape. They are sturdy!
It does give a very hard correction as compared to the larger link size, so do be careful if you do get this collar.
Hi,
I have 2 GSDs I use 2.25 mm Sprenger prongs, I bought 3 collars to give me enough extra links to create 2 collars that fit perfectly. The smaller links mean corrections are less harsh ( non existent on walks ) and fit can be adjusted perfectly. I have tried the heavier collars but prefer the smaller links, plus here in the UK where uneducated people do not understand prongs the smaller links disapear into their coats.
