No, 5 is not too old. He'll probably work till he's about 10. He'll be certified with the state of Ohio as dual purpose/narcotics. He's got lots of drive and will work through anything.

Yes that would be impressive to see it work till 10. I hope he does, but I seriously doubt it. Maybe a mal, but not a GSD. Don't know much about police work but how many GSDs do you see competing at 8 years old never mind 10? I'm not the statistic guru but I'm guessing not many. Prove us wrong though.

Here's an example for you...
Stormfront's Brawnson! Competed in Nationals up until last year (he was nearly 9yrs when last years Nats happened). Still works the street and is nearly 10yrs old (will be 10 at the beginning of next year). And is still siring litters!
Oh yeah, and he's a GSD <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

big difference between an example and an exception, and I think we can all agree that Branswon is an exceptional GSD, not just an example.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> Before some of you jump into deciding that MY dog will not work dual purpose at 10, you need to learn about him as a dog and where we'll be working. know wonder people don't get involved with SchH compatitions, forums like this one, and Police compatitions, you all are TOO bullish about others dogs. You think just cause your some hot shot trainer, master trainer, or whatever, you know EVERYTHING. And really...You don't know sh**t! Atleast about my dog. I'll remember to call you when he reaches 10, and watch him knock you on your A*S!!!
