Alice, is there any reason you, this surgeon or this board would not want this wonderful surgeon's name mentioned? I for one would love to know his name and where he's located. I know it makes sense to keep a tally of people to stay away from but it would be really great to have a list of people whose skills and/or bedside manner come highly recommended. I'm having trouble finding a good vet which is relatively low on the stress meter but should my dog need surgery, that's high on the stress meter and I'd hate to have to do research while under a timetable. Having a go-to list would be a great advantage for me and my dog. At least it's a place to start.
update: we're home from ben's surgery, which we ended up having done at a clinic 8 hours away. it meant a four day trip, and the costs of gas and motels, but it was worth it. i opted for the best surgeon, and he and the outcome more than validated my choice.
the surgery was at 1 pm, and at 4 pm they called me to come pick him up. the dog has not been in any pain at all, and can climb in and out of the car, go for walks, and in no way needed overnight hospitalization.
the vet who did the procedure answered all my questions thoroughly, even drew pictures to illustrate what the surgery entailed, and then, on top of it, gave us a "preferred customer" discount in consideration of the extra time and expense we'd had to come to him. he was terrific. and my shy dog warmed up to him right away.
it was a good thing i went with my gut, because having the dog operated on was stressful enough, without worrying about whether or not he was in the right hands. i hope others here might learn something from my experience.
Alice, that's great news. I'm glad everything worked out for you guys <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />! Wishing Ben a speedy recovery... but it kind of sounds like he's recovered already <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Alice, you did the right thing. It's a relief to hear Ben is doing so well. Sounds like you not only listened to your instinct, but used your noggin too!
