Mr. Oberman, Lyme Disease is a multidimensional illness caused by a spirochete(corked screw type organism, not a bacterium) The spirochete is named Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme disease was first recognized in the United States when a strange rash and arthritic like symptoms appeared among several families in the area of Lyme, Connecticut,in 1975, hence the name. The highest incident rate occurs in the Northeastern U.S. from Massachusetts to Maryland and in the States of Wisconsin, Minnesota, California, and Oregon. The deer tick Ixodes Dammini, is the vector of the spirochete in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S.While Ixodes Pacificus transmits the organism on the west coast. While these ticks are the carriers, the main reservoir of the spirochete is the white footed mouse (Peromyscus Leucopus)Female ticks lay their eggs on the ground which hatch into larva stage which molts into a nymph stage and then into an adult tick. Each of the above stages need to feed on blood from a host before they molt. The nymph stage which is no larger than a pinhead accounts for most infections, then stage needs several hours to a few days to infect the host. Adult ticks can transmit the disease but they are not usually very active during the summer months when most outdoor activity occurs. In addition, the adults are much larger than the nymph stage and easier to spot and be more likely removed by their intended victim. A bitch cannot transmit this disease to the puppies. Antibiotics such as tetracycline can kill these spirochetes. The earlier the treatment the better the prognosis. Hope this information is of some assistance to you.
