I have a 11 month old german shepard female who's ears stood by the time she was 3 1/2 month. Now I have a 3 month old male whos ears are very down. I have read that if the ears aren't up by 4 1/2 months that they should be taped. My question is if there is any negative effects if the ears are taped before 4 1/2 months or if taping them early will get them to stand faster? Both parents of this puppy had good ears. Thanks for any info.
Ruth
My pups ears were up at three months and then went down at four months. I tapped them and the pup pulled off the tape twice so I said the heck with it. In retrospect, if I had it to do over again I would retape everyday for a month instead of having floppy ears for life. It's purely an asthetic issue but it does change the appearance dramatically. Fortunately, in my case, the drive makes up for the ears.
Thanks Jody and Scott for your replies. I will wait until 4 1/2 months. Hopefully by then he will be done teething and then if they aren't up, I will tape. Other than it being a personal preference (having ears that stand). I believe it is a genetic trait and if both finish SCH2 or better, we will be breeding and I really don't want to breed in floppy ears.
Ruth
Taping or not taping will only affect the look, not the genetics. Taping flopping ears won't prevent the dog from passing on the floppy gene.
You probably know this, but your post made it sound kinda like you may think that taping the ears would prevent the dog from passing floppy ears on to his/her offspring <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
