I would suggest going to Ed's site http://www.leerburg.com and reading about e-collars and if you can order the video/dvd. They are a great tool when used correctly. There are also several other dvd's Ed has to offer on training that are absolutley great. I have a few and refer to them when I need to.
Also, as far as overpowering you, this can be fixed and you can have a nice calm dog on lead for walks, I unfortunately cannot explain it as well as some of the others on this forum so I am hoping they will chime in here to help you out. You picked the right discussion board to ask for help, everyone here is knowledgeable and very helpful.
Good luck and I hope this helps and like I said before, I am sure that someone will explain (in clear, understandable terms) how to keep your dog from overpowering you. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I betcha someone can, too. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Does "overpowering" mean just that he's stronger than you in general, or does it mean he pulls you along on walks, or what?
I know there are a lot of trainers here who can help if you supply some details.
Also, if you don't have Leerburg DVD #302, which covers all the basic obedience commands you mentioned (and much more), I'd get it right away. Many challenges can be dealt with, with just that video. http://www.leerburg.com/302.htm
I would start there for the foundations.
P.S. For pulling on walks, if that's what the overpowering part is, I'd be inclined toward a prong collar. That's one of its best jobs: It self-corrects a dog who pulls on walks. (Mike S. recommended the e-collar for the digging correction; great idea, because it's a remote device.)
