I am curious which bite sleeve I should get to start my 3 year old Dobe on. He is a show line dog with moderate prey drive(my novice opinion from watching some of Ed's videos), a grip that is becoming nicely calm, and we are currently building drive focus and grip. . I originally planned to get a Hard-arm with jute cover, but a friend of mine who was an ex-canine handler said most dogs take better to a soft sleeve when they begin. Any input would be appreciated.
I personally like soft sleeves (no Barrel) because its easier as a decoy to feel what the dog is doing which makes it easier to read them and allows me to adjust what I'm doing right away. Some dogs simply do not like a hard sleeve and will bite them short just to get the soft covering. Also, Alot of barrel sleeves are just too big which might be the case for your Dobe.
Depends on what your goals are and where the dog is at in training on bitework ???? Most of us non Schutzhund folks are going to ditch the sleeves pretty early and go to bite suit/ jacket /pants . There are many beginner and intermediate linen and jute sleeves available to get the dog on before you go to a barrel sleeve.
