Hi i am feeding my 14week pup on chicken mince which is all the bones & all the bits of chicken that do not get sold and are all minced up.but how much should i be feeding per day. regards Tom
cindy, your faq is truly thorough and excellent. it answers so many common questions that i haven't seen answered all in one place anywhere else.
just a couple of things i'd like to point out:
1. wild game. it is dangerous to feed mountain lion or bear to dogs because of trichinosis. also, never feed any part of the gi tract from a wild animal. the stage of development of certain parasites, by the time they reach the gi tract, is dangerous for dogs to ingest. this is information i was given bythe montana fish and game department.
2. if you are feeding raw fish, avoid all trout and salmon from the pacific northwest. they carry a parasite that kills dogs 90 percent of the time, if they get infected.
3. do not feed any meat that smells "off." if it revolts you, it is not good to feed your dog. i made the serious error of ignoring my own revulsion to feed my dog scrap from a slaughterhouse, and he got food poisoning and began vomiting blood. only feed human grade, fresh and clean smelling food. (note: if charcoal is one of the ingredients, you know it isn't human grade--some raw food companies use condemned meat and list charcoal. avoid these!)
thanks again for a great faq. it's going to spare a lot of us a lot of typing in future.
