Hey all ,I have a question about puppy development.I have an 11 mos. old male GSD who is fixed. At the vet yesterday he only weighed 62 pounds, this worries me because he is 11 mos. old and dogs half his age are twice his size. Now I understand the average weight for a male is between 70-90,but my vet said he doubts he will get much bigger.Could he be a dwarf?I read that GSD's are more prone to dwarfism than some other breeds, but I paid a good buck for him and while I don't want an oversized dog I do want a normal sized one.My four yr. old tips the scales at 92 but he is also very tall and long. The pup is only about half his size.Should I just accept that I have a small dog or can I expect a little more growth?Any opinions would be appreciated(also I'd like to add he is a good eater and is on a regular feeding schedule)

A DWARF!? No.
I have a 68-pound four-year-old GSD male, and I know of at least three working GSD males on this board who are under 70 pounds.
Unless he is skin and bones, I sure would not worry about a 62-pound weight at 11 months. JMO!

Thanks for the reassurance Connie,I guess looking at the two of them side by side is like night and day.He is very healthy and by no means skinny so I'm probably worrying for nothing.
From a previous thread you mentioned Science Diet was crap,I've switched back to Cannidea, any thoughts?

Well, I know you meant Connie, but I can't help jumping in on diet questions. Canidae is heads above Science Diet, (but then again, so is sawdust) but you can still do better. Look into The Honest Kitchen if you don't want to do a conventional raw diet; it's no more expensive than the other super premium brands (like Innova Evo, Nature's Variety, etc.) when you figure out the cost per pound when rehydrated. Do a search on this site for The Honest Kitchen; I recently posted a link to the cost comparison site, but now I lost it . Also read up on it on the main Leerburg site, as well as reading Ed's health articles. Sorry, I'm really annoying when it comes to canine nutrition.

This covers the best (fresh real food), the next best (The Honest Kitchen with RMBs added) and the next best (a list of the better kibbles).

How tall is the dog at the shoulders? Height is more important than weight IMO, my GSD is 24" at the shoulders, which is breed average for GSD's, n he weighs 65lbs. If you compare him to an 85lb GSD you can see that the lower weight is maybe 1" in height at most and a smaller build/frame overall. I actually prefer a more agile healthier lighter dog At 2-3 years old he'll start to fill out a little n look less like a skinny puppy. Enjoy your dog, he sounds fine. It's kinda funny how many people go thru this though, I too expected a huge 85lb GSD n so did quite a few people I know, our dogs all turned out to be in the 60's n the dogs can do everything an 85lb dog can do, if not better

You posted the link on the thread relating to my dogs "gas" problem. It can probably still be found there. I did manage to finally solve my problem with Natural Balance food.

off the subject but in my opinion a GSD is not an intimadating looking dog as a Rottie Pit bull, Boxer or any other bully breed. For most of us that facter alone is what we want or hopefully ever will need to detour any intruder and not need the actual encounter. I have no doubt or arguement as to the smaller dogs being just as capable or sometimes more than the larger. For a GSD I like mine more in the upper 80's to 90's for size as that is more imposing to any perp. I don't condone the oversized dogs as the health problems and loss of working ability.
