I did a search on Pano on this site b/c I have a 10 month old that fit this description. The earlier post advocate reducing the amount of protein in the diet to less than 24%. I have started tonight...
Re: Panosteitis...Sucess with homeopathic remedy.
I've had to deal with Pano for years. It is very common in males in my breed.
Even with X-rays, signs of Pano can be so minimal, that they can be missed, therin lies the danger of a false diagnosis. Years ago, a lot of unneccesary surgeries were performed, as a great many veterinarians were unfamiliar with this condition. I've had three males that had Pano beginning around 7 months of age and they limped off and on until around 18 months or more. One boy had it so badly that he would not eat, could not get comfortable, and moaned in pain. The others never missed a beat, exhibiting almost no signs of pain, and ran around like normal, but limped and held the affected limb off the ground when sitting or standing. It would also shift from leg to leg occassionally. Affected dogs are taken off puppy food immediately, and in fact in my breed we take them off it entirely, around 6-7 months of age. There is some thought that the high protein content in the puppy food is an aggravating factor, and attacks may be brought on by stress and activity. We do not give any drugs or painkillers, and are cautious about even walking the dog on hard surfaces.
I wish I had known earlier of the homeopathic remedy that I now use. I begin admistering it at the first signs of lameness and within three days, the dog is no longer limping. I have used this many times with great results. Amazing...it made a believer out of me. If you are interested, contact me privately for the info.
Good news from the Vet today. It is some sort of soft tissue strain around her elbow. X-Rays looked great and no sign of anything wrong structurally with the elbow, or leg in general. Pano was ruled out also. My Vet injected the injured area several times with vitimans and told me that she should be fine but told me that she will probably not be 100% for about 6 weeks or so. One adult asprin per day for pain. Thanks to everyone who replied.
