3) The dog only gets called out of the down for some other task 1 out of every 100 times.
4) I never free the dog on the first return and 99 out of 100 times I will release the dog from the down at the end of the exercise.

use of these gadgets... exhausted all other options...
Best danged gadget I've found to work with my dogs - both for obedience and free-running. I can't say if all of my other options are exhausted or not because I am still learning, but in the meantime, this is definitely the way to go for me. Take a little time on this forum to read up on e-collars, view Ed's e-collar video, educate yourself, and then I feel your response will be different.
Sorry for getting off-topic with my e-collar preference... but I am starting the down/stay with it, and things are progressing well.
Michelle, I believe you already have & use an e-collar for dog-aggro, but I don't know if you have Ed Frawley's e-training DVD (ooops, different Michelle, but same info!) below:
Utilizing the "nick" button on very low stim is easier on the dog AND on the handler's bond with their pet than any other correction method, IMHO <:-)
As another poster has already mentioned, the proper use of an e-collar is VERY helpful for 2 types of handlers in particular (those with too little strength of body OR will, and those who tend to over-correct with too MUCH force) -- Of course a remote trainer can be abused, just like ANY other training tool...
Candi I think you must be mistaken,Wrt to an e-collar as far as owning one?? No I do not own one,or intend useing one as stated in the previous e-mail I DO NOT LIKE THEM, but it is a free world, as far as the education aspect of getting one in the future and literature regarding their use I have no particular need for one, PERSONALLY just to clarify, I was only offering an opinion on them,I have seen them used by others as stated, if it is going to work for Brian then it is His perogative to use one,I am not prescriptive just offering a perspective view,
I do not have a problem with my downs, I have 3 Begleithunds confidently under my belt, I am not dissatisfied with my current training methods, so I am not looking for one.It is afterall Brian's choice how he moves forward with his training programe.
