I'll start a new thread on this so 'Survival Pack' doesn't get hijacked. Kevin Tikivik asked about micro-chipping and where to have it done.
I had both of my boys micro-chipped last month (they are 17 months old) at the vet's office. It's a simple procedure - the chip looks like a grain of rice - that they inject under the back of the neck. Then they ran a scanner over it to show me it was in place and also how they read the number. The vet's office has the form to register your dog's number nationally (my base is AVID). The fee is $15.00 per dog. They only give you cheap plastic tags with the ID number on it, so I would recommend you order a stainless steel tag with the ID number, your phone number, and the national phone number. You should keep a copy of the form with the ID number in a safe place. I actually ordered 3 new tags so I would have one for each of their collars.
Also, in my county, you can obtain a lifetime license if your dog is micro-chipped or tattooed. However, the vet must complete and sign this form as proof of the micro-chipping/tattooing. This form must be filed at the Court House, and I think the fee is $32.00 per dog. You will receive your license, and also a form with all the info on it. Also keep this form in a safe place so you will have it if you ever have to refer to it. I do not put the license tags on my dogs. They would be real jingle bells if I put all of the tags on. I DO have their rabies tags on because I don't ever want there to be a question about that if they happen to get away from me. I can always produce the license if I have to. So they now have their regular ID tag, their micro-chip ID tag, and their rabies tag on the "main" collar. I have duplicate ID tags for their other two special collars.
Thanks Jan,
yah I Live pretty far from any vet, infact we don't even have an SPCA in Nunavut. there is a vet-clinic coming in this month. this clinic comes in twice a year and ill give them a heads up on the microchips. I agree that this is a priceless security messure.
here's a question: my boy is micro-chipped but not tattoed at this point. can anyone direct me to a website w/chip scanners? evidently, USA will accept a m/c dog at trial IF the owner provides the scanner.

so, where to find a scanner? Help?
Do you know what kind of chip it is? There's more than one kind, such as ISO and AVID.
If you ask your vet which scanner they use, then you will know what kind you want to look for.
My understanding is that "universal" scanners are not yet really universal.
But I think what you really need is to ask your vet what scanner s/he has for the chips s/he uses, and then look for that scanner. Avid, for example, has a scanner rental deal. Once you know what kind you need, if you Google it, you'll find it for sale (and maybe for rent).
I don't know any of this scanner info first hand, but this is what I read recently in some vet med newsletter.
i'll have to check his paperwork, no big deal. thanks connie--as always, a veritable font of useful info <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />!!
