Hey guys! ?....I keep my gs crated while I am at work during the day. Most of the time I am able to come home for lunch and walk her. Is there anything anyone would suggest that I could buy for her to keep her mentally busy while she is in the crate? Also, I hear different things regarding an age of a dog.At what age are they still considered a puppy vs. an adult dog? Thanks !!!

My best suggestion for crating during the day is to get up early and have a power walk before you ever leave her. There are toys that dispense treats with certain actions on the dog's part, and many people swear by leavin on a radio or TV. A chew item might work out (although that depends on the dog, IMO; is your dog a slow and careful chewer as opposed to an inhaler?); I tend not to give chew things unless I am there keeping an eye out.
But I have learned that above all, leaving a tired dog works out best for everyone. Dogs generally sleep more hours than humans, so if you can leave a dog who is not filled with frustrated energy, then you will probably find that a fast walk or game outside at lunch will work out just fine.
I have a 7.5 month old GSD...she is crated daily for about 4 hours. Before crating her, we do a long walk with some obedience thrown into it (sits, downs, stays, fronts, etc. as we walk). Then we come back and get my 4 yr old GSD and do another walk.
This seems to tire them both out nicely. The pup gets a second walk in the afternoon with my mom...would do more, but it gets dark too early now so it is dark when I come home from work.
I do not leave anything in her crate when I am gone except a blanket...she is quite the chewer though.
My older dog is not crated and enjoys sleeping while we're gone...probably on the couch or something!
