I know the local Sch. club in Ventura CA has a big police component. I think it's run partly to help with fund-raising. Why not give them a call & see what sort of things they did for fund-raising or beginning their programme? http://www.channelislandsschutzhundclub.com/index.html
Well, I have been talking with my neighbor who is our city commissioner. He said that the city used to have a couple of Police K9's. The city just recently tried to pass a levy to allow the hiring of 15 new officers and it got shot down. Unfortuntely Butte, MT is a very poor city. We are very shorthanded as far a police officers go and he seemed to think that if we could find a way to fund outside of the city coffers it could possibly be a go, but he had no idea on where to start either. He is at least going to start asking some questions.
I am going to find a way to at least get us a narcotics dog. End of story. I have 2 meth heads on my block, and this city is quickly becoming meth central. I would appreciate any ideas that people have. And thanks to those of you who have responded.
P.S. I just had an idea for sponsors (pardon me if they don't make sense, I'm here because I couldn't sleep but I'm still sleepy):
Lions Club, VFW, Rotary club, local businesses, AKC, Federal Gov. grants, local dog breeders, corporate sponsors like large chains, eg., Home Depot, Target, food chains, hotel & motel chains, newspapers, how about the local military base (if you have any in the area). Umm, that's all I can think of for the moment.
Maybe I was too vague in where I need help. I need to know where to start. Do I need a license or non-profit sort of thing set up? I don't want it in my name, I want it in a non-profit sort of thing, that is controlled by many people. I am the only one starting it (so far), but I want it controlled by more people. Do I need to talk to the local PD first? Or should I just start it and let the money build and then present it to them?
I don't think I will have any problem getting local businesses to contribute to the cause, I just need help getting the ball rolling. But again I thank you for your help and ideas.
I'd talk to the PD first so you can gear everything to the programme you're trying to start. Have you done a google yet on starting a non-profit & what's involved? Should be gov. info on that. How about talk to the local non-profits & see what they had to go through?
The first thing you need to do is to talk to the Chief of that police department. If he's not interested, you're waisting your time. As far as money, there are grants available and there's always private donations. Our car was paid for by a grant, and just about everything else was paid for by private donations. Most of those donations came from the local businesses. Good luck.
the main thing that jumps out at me is, you go around trying to promote this thing, and someone gets curious. they ask people in the PD about it, they say they've never heard of it, and you look like a scam artist.
a christmas present of a large chunk of money so you can go up to the PD and say "surprise! you can get a k9 now!" is a nice idea in theory, but i highly doubt it'd play out that way.
