Just wondering if anyone ever had a dog with this (symptomatic or asymptomatic) and how it was treated, how much the dog could do and what treatments were applied (meds, holistic, etc.), thanks in advance,
AL
yes, my dog that died last year had it most of his life. there wasn't anything to be done to treat it, except we did take him to an acupuncturist and that seemed to help him. once the spine is fused, there isn't any pain from that per se, but there can be a domino effect--it caused structural irregularities down through the lumbar curve and the hips that eventually rendered him lame and we had to put him down.
when it gets bad enough, you can extend his life quite a bit with prednisone. just don't take him off it once he's been maintained on it, or he may collapse and not be able to recover.
lost mein liebchen 3 yrs ago christmas eve to spondylosis. she went thru hell and we did right along with her until we came to the point where there was nothing we could do to help her, but to end her suffering. our vet seemed to think it was genetic; her gait, immune system and a number of other factors contributed to it. i know some folks try to control it with diet and supplements. i'm not sure how effective that is, but perhaps if it is caught early, before much damage is done, the success might be greater. i feel for anyone going thru this with their dog. perhaps someday there will be a cure or at least some better treatment.
if there are no dogs in heaven, then when i die i want to go where they went. ---will rogers
