I'm in a crisis, I just discovered that my 14 WEEK OLD male GSD has cataracts in both eyes, and the possible beginnings of dysplasia in his right elbow. Has anyone else out there had to deal with cataracts in such a young pup? I need some objective views on whether or not this pup is in for a lifetime of being blind and lame. Thank you
Kelly - I dont know who is telling you that your pup has elbow dysplasia at 14 weeks of age - but they are blowing hot air.
No one can tell if a pup has elbow dysplasia at this age - if a Vet told you - well he or she needs to go back to school because he must have gone out drinking the night before he had the class on elbow dysplasia because its not diagnosed
I will leave the cataract issue to someone else. But if it were me I would be taking the pup to a University Vet Hospital.
ed is right in that elbow dysplasia cannot be diagnosed positively at 14 weeks, however, if you are seeing signs of "possible beginnings of dysplasia" you may have cause for concern because symptoms can occur at that young age. keep in mind, though, that there are a half dozen other things which could produce similar symptoms. the fact that your pup is also afflicted with cataracts kind of points in the direction of mineral deficiency/malabsorption problem and i would do as ed suggested in getting the pup to a university vet clinic or at least someone who is more of an expert in that area.
