Yesterday I stopped to pick up some chicken backs and necks to try from a new butcher. When the stock boy brought out my cartons, another lady standing close by asked if they were for my dogs. I replied that, yes, they were. Expecting to hear a lecture, she surprised me by saying, “Oh how nice, someone else feeds raw too. Now, where do you buy your tripe? I know of a place that sells it very reasonably...” I replied that I don’t feed tripe, but thanks for the information anyway. After a long pause, and a longer look down her nose, she simply said, “Oh, I guess you don’t show your dogs, do you?”
Now where the heck did that come from? What does feeding tripe have to do with show(ing) dogs? Or not showing them, for that matter? If I don’t feed tripe, does that mean I don’t have a working dog either?
How many others here have failed your beloved animal?
Yeesh Jan, I feed my showline dog tripe!! What's the matter with you??
It's positively disgusting to look at but he loves it. I really don't know what the connection is with showline - maybe it is supposed to make their coat glisten? Whatever. I like to give my dog variety and since he's allergic to beef and something else (haven't figured it out yet), I'm somewhat limited.
I cook it on the grill outside because people say it stinks pretty badly if you cook it inside. I've served it to him plain, with cheese, with sprinkled chicken liver. He eats it no matter how I serve it .
I did occasionally feed GREEN tripe only. It does really smell bad but the dogs love it!! The white tripe product that you get at the grocery store has been BLEACHED! I now can get freeze dried green tripe nuggets (for lack of a better word to discribe the pieces)& feed that as a treat.
Just join the rest of us Jan and get your tripe!!
Those big dogs of yours will love you for it, ok I know they do but you know they want some...
That way next time you see this woman(if you ever see her again) tell her that you decided on feeding tripe since that's all it takes to have show dogs
I have a friend that is a distributor for Bravo Raw dog food. They just came out with the freeze dried green tripe & he gave me a package last week....my dogs love it. I have no idea what is costs because he just gave it to me to try & see if the dogs liked it. I occasionally feed the bravo to my female, but I have been giving it to the pup along with the same Honest Kitchen & other meaty bones that I feed my female. (I usually make up my female's raw diet myself.)Bravo is frozen raw food with muscle & organ meat, ground bone & veggies all in a sausage shapped tube. It comes in 1,2,5 etc lb tubes. It comes in the usual varieties of meats along with a number of exotic types. My friend feeds all his dogs & bred pups this along with additions of meaty bones, recreational bones etc. I think that you can google the Bravo name & see if there is anyone in your area that is a distributor. They have 2 plants here in upstate CT where they process the food. I don't know where else in the country they have distribution centers if any.
