HI everyone just a quick update on Max and the bloat. I took him to the hospital last night and had his staples removed he seems to be doing fine,he's still sore and I am keeping him as quite as possible.Just have to take it easy for the next couple of weeks. The doctor said he looks great and is doing fine.
bloat is a condition in which the dog's gut becomes inflated with gas and/or air that can't escape. it blows up like a balloon. sometimes, the stomach also twists, and tissue in the stomach and spleen die from lack of circulation. blood that doesn't flow becomes poisoned.
it's a very dangerous condition, and mortality rates are very high. unfortunately, most vets have limited experience with emergency bloat surgeries.
if you have a dog at higher risk for bloat, it's a good idea to find out which vet hospital in your area has the most experience, and know ahead of time where you would have to go and exactly how long it would take you to get there.
this is a huge topic. do a search online and on this forum and you will get lots of information.
