Marc that is good news.
Please know that I think it is great that you are going to have the dog evaluated. That is the first step and I hope that it all turns out well for you and your dog.
From the way it sounds, you really want to do things the "right" way and train the dog properly.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a protective canine partner, what is wrong is the people who have protective types and do not do anything to control it, then the dog tags someone and the dog becomes deemed a liability and a danger and is euthanized for a persons ignorance.
Good luck, and let us know how you guys progress.

I'm not so sure I'd hang on too tightly to the thought that your dog was "protecting you". First off, a little "nip" would say to me that the dog simply got excited and wanted to join in. I would hope that if it was a pack drive thing, the dog would have done something a little more convincing... Further to that, I'm not sure about all dogs, but I've seen, and been told, that if Alpha is fighting 'alpha' better watch his/her butt, because guess who advances in rank if Alpha is knocked off??? Especially if 'alpha' is losing the fight in the dog's eyes.
Also, it's not defensive drive. The dog was in no way threatened.
