that is a part of their registered name, nothing to do with titles. Vom or Von means "from" - such as my kennel name for all of the dogs (titled, untitled, old, young) that I breed is vom Eichenluft. Meaning "from the kennel Eichenluft" it is a part of their name.
'vom' and 'von' translate roughly to 'of' or 'from'. It is a part of the dogs registered name and has nothing to do with any titles.
Most breeders of German lines use the following naming convention
1. Pups in a litter are named using names that all start with the same letter of the alphabet. The litters are named consecutively. The breeders first litter is the A litter. The pups in that litter will be named with names like Able, Aaron, Albert, the second litter will be use names like Bill, Bob, Betty. Most breeders in the US go for something vaguely Teutonic sounding. When the breeder gets to Z, the naming cycle starts again at 'A'.
2. The second part of the pup's name is the kennel name. For example, Leerburg. Again, many people in the US go for something that sounds German or they do a translation to German -- Eichberg (Oak Mountain) is an example, Leigbiter is one with no direct translation but it looks and sounds German, . The kennel name is unique and is registered with the AKC or the USA organization.
Cool, I've always wondered about that myself. I knew about the alpha numeric names, though I have a question on that. If a breeder has, let's say three dogs, and of those dogs each bears one litter, would all of those litters be "A" litters or would they be the "A, B, and C" even though the total of pups are one litter each from three dogs?
It is litter-letter by breeder, not by dog. In other words, the first litter bred by a breeder is "A" litter. Second, no matter which female - could be a year or a month later - same female or another female, doesnt' matter what stud dog - the second litter is "B". Third litter by same breeder is "C". All puppies named "A" vom kennelhaus for the first litter, "B" vom kennelhaus for the second, and so on.
Thanks Molly ,I learn something new every day, make sense.I was wondering after I wrote it, but that is what I thought I was told a while ago and never asked again, but it was by a german breeder that did not speak well english and wrote me an e-mail h in broken english.I guess i understood nothing on what he wrote
