I'd love to be the one who euthanizes dogs at the shelter, I wouldn't want any PETA nut or enthusiast tell anyone else they're mean or an idiot for putting dogs down. Besides, I've killed plenty of kittens, pups, and wild animals who wouldn't make it, what is a few more.
UHG. Aren't you cuddly? You should go to Match.com and put that on your site: "Loves cold weather, back yard breeders and euthanizing dogs at the shelter." I bet you'd get lots of responses.
Judy, Susan, you guys are cracking me up. "Knuckle dragger"? HA! Can I get a "hell yeah!"
I thought this guy was a little off when he first started posting here. In regards to this post; I'm starting to think he's enjoying the attention.
excuse me? I'm pretty damn religious on what dogs are bred with what. I don't like backyard breeders, but I will not call someone a byb just because they have 1-2 pairs to mate. People have to start somewhere, and that is at the bottom.
Would you rather have some commercial entity like the company in Canada which drew great amounts of bad attention because they bred simply for the money? They had just tons and tons of dogs in crates. A commercial puppymill!
Like I said, there is no real definition of a Backyard Breeder, only some views of people who don't like/want people to breed. I try to stay neutral on most topics, but this one is just a flame fest. You'd be good Slashdotters!

After looking at the website, I have to say I don't think that having only 1-2 pairs is why everyone's been calling this woman a BYB. And yes, everyone has to start at the bottom....but some people stay there.
Well. Truthfully I can only hope a person can improve. I try to relate to myself at times. Maybe the person is not fast as he/she would want to be at implementing their dream?

I disagree. If someone wants to go about breeding in the right fashion, they don't start with "breeding pairs" and they do not necessarily have to start "at the bottom". All you need is to invest your time and energy into improving your knowledge base. Become involved in your breed and/or sport of choice. I shake my head at the people who jump into breeding without getting a lay of the land so to speak.
I have been active in my breed for nearly 10 years now. I have served as the VP twice for my national breed club, served on the board of numerous breed clubs and have immersed myself in my breed and the sports I enjoy with my dogs, including sacrificing significant vacation time and money to attend every national specialty for my breed in those nearly ten years. It is only now that I feel that I have the requisite knowledge to breed. I am still searching for an appropriate bitch for my litter and am likely going to wait for a litter that is planned in the next year or two meaning I won't be breeding until I have about 12-15 years in the breed. I already have a waiting list of people interested when I finally decide to breed.
I am not saying this to toot my own horn or to say that this is the only way to go about breeding responsibly. Heck, I tend to obsess so I am probably more neurotic about knowledge than most :-p I am merely saying that I get frustrated when people excuse poor breeding practices with just starting out or being at the bottom. It does not have to be that way but it sure is easier to produce puppies to sell for $$$$ if you use that excuse.
After all there is no rule that says that you have to breed in order to become knowledgable ;-)
I had a request to intervene in thsi thread.
It has gotten off track really and so I'm going to leave the thread but close it to more posts. The whole direction of this thread seems "odd".
