Hello: I think I have a couple of questions unique to the Forum because I've read a heck of a lot and I haven't seen the answer. If you can help by answer or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. This is my first post - I am new. I have a 7 month old GS and a 13 year old Lab. I'm going to be switching them to raw very soon - have ordered 2 of the popular books and should get them this week. BUT, I'm impatient and have already started giving chicken wings as a treat (only one to chew on at night). Then I went and bought some turkey necks and leg quarters on Sunday and gave each a leg quarter last night as a meal. My questions are:
1. Is that bad since I haven't done the reading and have not yet purchased any supplements? If it's not bad because I haven't given them very much, does that mean it's o.k. to continue?
2. I purchased a few cans of mackeral but they are packed in oil. Is that o.k. and do I need to worry about the Sodium content?
Cathi,
here is a web site on supplements ,I don't do supplements other than kelp and salmon oil.But others do more than that.it's all up to you.You are doing the right thing I think you are on the right track. Why not switch them now.I always get the fish in water not oil, I don't know that it's a bad thing to give them with the oil that comes with it, but I think water is much healthier. Becareful with sodium. Here are a few web site for you to read and it helps alot on many questions you might have.
Welcome to Raw! http://www.rawlearning.com/supplementmyths.html
I would get fish oil and Vitamin E (which the dog uses in processing oil supplements), and then base any other supplements on what you feed. The salmon oil and E and kelp are all I usually give too, because of the produce and the variety I feed.
When I give canned fish, I do rinse it well unless it's no-salt-added. If it's no-salt, then you could give it as is, but probably in very small amounts at first, since packed in oil will be pretty rich.
If you read the sites you have now, and aim for the complete animal in the poultry you're giving (not in one meal, but over several), I think that would be fine for a few days while you read up on the organ meats, etc. All JMO.
Wow, the lack of common sense I have amazes me sometimes. It never occurred to me to rinse the canned mackeral off. Duh! Thank you both. I have lots of reading to do.
Hi Cathi. Just wanted to congratulate you on your decision, and wish you happy reading! Gary and I were so "worried" that we would do something wrong at first, that it was hard to just dive in and get started. What helped us put it in perspective was the realization that even minor "mistakes" with raw feeding could hardly be worse that what was coming out of those crap kibble bags. Of course we have continued to learn more and fine tune our program - but that notion of just how awful the products we were feeding truly were really helped us over the initial hump.
