Been lurking here for awhile. Can't believe the amount of good information that I have gotten here. Haven't found another forum with nearly the amount of info.
My wife Megan and I have our first (well our 2nd, the first had a tragic ending) dog as adults. Lucy is a 4mth old Beagle with boundless energy (of course).
I have founds Ed's puppy and basic obedience videos indespensible. I've been around dogs my entire life, but never was the primary caretaker. We are committed to raising as healthy, well trained dog as possible.
Hope to find something to keep her mind busy as she matures, tracking, agility, ? haven't decided yet.
Great pictures!
Nothing like a beagle, that was my choice instead of a King Charles but my son was stuck on his pick and since it's his dog I had no choice in that matter, plus I have my 3 GSDs'.
Great choice! http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r77/cadogancna/
All the dogs I was around when younger were 50lbs+. My wife fell in love with Beagles at somepoint in her life and I knew this wasn't an arguement worth fighting too much for.
I'm delighted in our choice, though the energy level of a hound puppy is a little higher then expected and who would have thought that a little Beagle would act like a crocidile. Hopefully that phase passes soon.
Our first beagle was the calmest puppy/cuddliest puppy I have ever seen. We should have known sooner that this was not a good sign. Turned out that he was born with 2 major heart valve defects and we had to put him down at 4 months old. The congestive buildup was just too much and he had to be carried outside. Hardest thing that I ever had to go through. The breeder we used claimed that she had never seen this before and let us have first pick at the next litter. That helped tremendously.
Glad to be here with so many knowledgable and resposible dog owners.
Keith, your "baby girl" is sooo adorable! Your story(wife falling in love with a breed) sounds like mine. I fell in love with GSD's and my fiance never liked them(no thanks to dog shows) but I had my mind set and I have a 14 month old female GSD and she is my baby girl. He had grown up with labs and for some unexplainable reason... yeah right.. lol.. we now own a 30lb 4 month old chocolate lab. That's what happens when you get a couple of dog lovers together! LOL

That's sad for your first puppy Beagle, but at least you had a compassionate breeder that replaced your pup, I think that's great. He is adorable, we have neighbors that everytime I run into them they always tell me (the husband) how much he loves Beagles, but the wife loves my GSDs' , I always tell them to get both one dog for each.He grew up with Beagles and she grew up with German shepherds. When I met my husband he was a cat person, grew up with cats, no dogs , when we moved in together I brought my 2 shepherds and the rest is history...

Why can't I have a fiance that likes dogs??
Sorry for my little hissy fit; I always feel sorry for myself when I read about people who have 2 dogs or more . Sniff.
