It`s actually pretty small, but the green ink against this dogs really light and HUGE ears really stands out. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> He`s probaly got room for 2 or 3 more cell phone #s if he ever changes it. He travels all the time with his dog so if it gets loose his home phone # and address don`t really work so well. It`s a big white GSD. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

The answers to that question are the same answers, except that the microchip doesn't detach from the collar accidentally and can't be removed by a thief (or just by someone who finds your dog after an accident, say, or a natural disaster, or a gate left open, and on and on.......).
I realize this is rare, but there were some purebred dogs stolen and their microchips had been cut out. There was an article in Dog Fancy or Dog World some time ago that I happened to catch.

Both of my dogs are priceless to me and so for that reason both of them are chipped, tatooed and have tags indentifying me. If they get seperated from me I want the person finding them to be able to know how to get them back to me. I do not care if it is a fade a money maker or and ego thing, I want my dog back if he gets lost.
Terry
Treat them like they are animals
Train them like they are animls
Love them like they are people ................. Louis Grant

QUOTE: I realize this is rare, but there were some purebred dogs stolen and their microchips had been cut out. END
I saw that, too, but thought it was so rare that it wasn't worth mentioning (and also not really something we could defend against)........ we can do what we can do........
And I'm in 100% agreement with Terry, who said: "Both of my dogs are priceless to me and so for that reason both of them are chipped, tatooed and have tags indentifying me. If they get seperated from me I want the person finding them to be able to know how to get them back to me. I do not care if it is a fake a money maker or and ego thing, I want my dog back if he gets lost." END
I don't care, either.......I know it works, I've seen it work, it's cheap and easy, and it's a backup to the tags.
And for the tattoo part: My vet is polling the clients to find out how many would be interested in a tattoo program that uses the vet's telephone number. This would eliminate the problems with changing cell numbers, with the public "display" of a person's number, and all those questions. The vet's office would keep the records of all the contact info, updated as necessary; they'd be the contact for the person who had found the dog. Of course, people could still have whatever they wanted on the dog's tags and/or the chip.........tags can be replaced if info changes, and chips can have the databank info changed.
Of course the vet could go out of business or something, but that's SO much less likely than the owner changing his/her address, telephone, etc. Even when vets retire, someone else generally takes over........and we are not talking about an animal who lives for 80 years.
I voted "yes" when she asked me. Tiny tattoo with nothing but the 10 digits....I like it.
BTW, in case this hasn't come up on this board: Tags that say "reward" on them may not be a great idea because the info is right there telling a potential thief that this is a good target. But the tags riveted to the inside of the collar -- much better. (They are also not prone to getting caught or pulled off.)

And don't put the microchip tags on your dogs collar either, no reason to give a thief any opportunities.
I realize this is rare, but there were some purebred dogs stolen and their microchips had been cut out
I'd like to know how valid this story really is, do you know how hard it would be to cut out something smaller than a grain of rice out of subcutaneous tissue <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />?

Well, technically, at least, it can be done, and apparently has been done (described in The Veterinary Record in an article about a rare histological reaction to an early microchip). I don't know, though, how reliable the report I read was about thieves of valuable purebred dogs; I think they'd need to be in cahoots with a crooked vet. Could be -- might be -- don't know. It didn't seem worth devoting much space to.

So would I! I don't trust reporters at all - I was just mentioning that it had been reported in a national dog "news" magazine.

When I had my dog microchipped, my vet said the chip had barbs on it to keep it from migrating.
