Oh yeah, and no "re-direct" or feed him cookies when other dogs approach him to make him associate strange dogs with treats! If your timing is off you will do just the opposite - been there - done that!
Nope - this time I am NOT putting up with it - period
This time - should my puppy make ANY aggressive noise, stance, thought - I will correct him with a correction like he's never had before (and he's had none yet!). I will NOT put up with that behaviour - period!
There will be no doubt in his mind that his pack leader isn't pleased ;-)
So a shake down, choke with a collar or zap from an e-collar? What is this pack leaders correction of choice?
I do believe that the amount of the correction should be adaquate, but his first correction (and hopefully last for this 'offence') doesn't need to be a zap from an e-collar on it's highest setting. I think a good correction should stop it from needing the e-collar later. It will not work on my other two because of the years of stupid things I did (and am completely owning up to!)
I do have one though and I'll use it if I have to!
Start with a flat, if it does not produce the desired results, try a choke (although I don't care much for them as they can cause too much damage)...I would skip choke and go to a prong...see if she responds to the desired behavior with that....e-collar is a LAST resort. Not sure an e-collar would even be recommended for a dog your dogs age. I would PM Ed about an e-collar for your dog at this age.
Oh and don't be worried and fawn over her if she "yelps" after you give her a good correction. She doesn't yelp from pain, she yelps from surprise, and in protest because she thinks she is the pack leader. YOu are not hurting her.
This is a mistake I did with my large male Catahoula. I've seen him get injured in various ways (scratches, bites, cracked paws) and not even notice - he's very hard. Yet a correction on a prong collar, which is not painful, I tried it on myself - will make him yelp. I have found with my dog that if he yelps, that means he felt it.
Trust me. She's not hurt. (unless she goes into avoidance).
I strongly recommend Ed's Dealing with Dominant Dogs DVD which I just bought, and you should also get his Puppy 8 weeks to 8 months video too.
Nice!! Thanks for the advice everybody, I'm going out for both of Ed's videos and a prong collar. As the flat collar corrections don't dissuade my dog plus my wife doesn't have the experience (and is recovering from a brkn ankle) to keep her heeled. So I don't have to be the only one walking the dog. :-)
Another cool thing is I found out that Lee Hanarhan is local to me so Sasha and myself are getting signed up for an upcoming OB class. <insert Disney> It's a Small world after all..
