I have read in some dog magazines that there are some dog sitting companies, that will come to your house 3 times a day to check, exercise and feed your dog.
Before they can take care of your dog you have to sign documents stating that you are leaving you pet in the care of a sitter.
Anyway long story short, the sitter has contact details for your prefered vet, medical history etc. The sitter also places a tag on the dogs collar with their contact number on it, so if the dog is to get out and someone finds it the dog can be reunited ASAP.
If yu are going away the last thing you want your dog to feel is stress. Otherwise something bad is bound to happen.
Yes, my sitter actually is a small bonded dog-sitting company (she is the main person, but she has employees, too, for particularly busy times).
It might be over-the-top, but I couldn't be comfortable being gone for days with just walking, potty, feeding... I have her sleep overnight too. It does cost more (and it means that I have to travel cheap! :grin, but without that I think I would have some level of anxiety the whole time I was gone.
Also, I like the idea that it's a company, no matter how small, because I figure that even if the regular sitter got sick or something, someone else would cover.
I really like that temporary tag idea (with the sitter's cell number on it). I am traveling in March, and I am going to do that. Thanks for that suggestion.

A pet sitter was watching a client's cat while the client was out of the country for an extended period of time. The cat got sick and was brought into us for treatment. During the visit and subsequent follow up visits this sitter made her increasing frustration with her charge known to our staff. During her last phone call to us she flat out said she was considering taking the cat to the shelter and surrendering it as a stray!!
We couldn't believe it! And this old, ill cat would have been euthanized in a heartbeat. Luckily, I know a wonderful person at the SPCA and was able to give Joe a head's up. They would have given the cat back to us to keep until the owner returned or was contacted.
