The really sad thing is that they probably wouldn't be going to jail for that long just based on an animal cruelty charge. They were charged with other, more penalty-heavy, charges as well.
A while ago I posted about the kennel owners about an hour from me that decapitated a pit bull as a threat to the owner. These women will face jail time, but for things such as forgery and intimidation. They are not even being charged with animal cruelty because the prosocuters know that the other charges will bring a stiffer sentence.
While I'm thrilled that they're going to jail for any reason, I'm really disgusted that in most places and cases, animal cruelty alone is just a slap on the wrist.

Point taken. However, look on the bright side . All is not lost:
Where the general public's moral compass fails, our prison population takes up the slack . So they may have been sentenced to 10 years in prison for things other than the torture of the puppy, I believe it's that inhuman act, that savageness that will get them, hmmm, culled!!
I can't bear it. These despicable evil, sorry excuses for human beings deserve to die. So do people who molest children. I'm sick and tired of these people getting off with minimal jail time. And don't think they'll hate it in jail. There are people who are in and out of jail. It's their way of life and a game to them. In fact they're right at home with all the other idiots in there. It doesn't bother them, and they get 3 squares a day, courtesy of their victims who are taxpayers. Sometimes I think if the legal system doesn't start serving us better, people will start filling in the gaps.
On the upside though, prison populations have a pecking order and their own kind of justice. Inmates are not all considered equals among themselves. For example, child molestors are ostracised and regularly abused in prison; so it's not all just "a day in the life". They live every moment in fear, as they should. I've heard rumors to the effect that animal abusers are enjoying a similar fate. One can hope...
