I read somewhere that you should not let your puppy walk up and down the stairs for the first X Months in order to not aggravate Hip Dysplasia or whatever. I went back to re-read it and cannot find what book I read it in and cannot remember exactly what it said.
Our pup has only been able to actually get up and down the stairs on his own for the last two weeks, and as he now weighs about 25 lbs, I let him walk up and down the stairs with me on leash. Of course he has been scaling snow banks for about 4 weeks, now that we actually have some snow.
Is there any concern with Large Breed Puppies and Stairs?
Both my dogs have been climbing stairs since Day 1.. I sure as heck ain't gonna carry em! I hear lotsa silly things... just don't let em charge up and down it all day long, but it's not a big deal IMO.
I let my 16 week old puppy on the stairs, but not over and over, and I have him trained that he's only allowed to go slowly on them. I don't know if it's ultimately bad on his hips to use stairs at this age, but I'm sure falling down the stairs would be!
I agree with Mike...there's no way I'm carrying him!

I was told uphill walking is good for my dysplastic puppy. We also toss a ball uphill for exercise and conditioning. The ground here is sandy and soft on his joints.
