Hi, Lovella. If you are still talking about house training/potty training, it makes no difference how big or small your dog is. One of the major housebreaking tips in the Miniature Pinscher (very very small dogs) handbook is to tether the dog to you, ie, attach the leash to the dog and to you, like your belt loop or something. Wherever you are, the dog is. No better way to avoid accidents in a puppy, or to retrain an older dog. Crates are highly recommended, too. Size of dog is irrelevent. Age makes a difference, since very young puppies don't have good control of their bladder and bowel functions. Keep reading Ed's housebreaking and puppy raising articles. You might want to buy his puppy dvd's, too.
Having them where you are allows you to notice in time that they are getting ready to have an accident and prevent it by picking them up and taking them outside. It's very easy to take your eyes off a dog for a very short period of time, if the phone rings, or there's a loud noise outside, or whatever. It only takes a second for a dog do releive itself, especially a youngster who just "goes" without searching for that perfect spot like an older dog does.
i am not an expert, but the leash thing is not just a potty training aid, but also training the pup/dog that you are the pack leader.
my pup is always on a lead know matter what or where we are. i do allow him free rein o the kitchen, but only for brief times. i also have his lead attached to me while doing things. i think..(think is key word) that if your pup had the whole kitchen to wander, he can relieve himself anywhere. if he is in a crate, well thats where he sleeps so he would be less likely to potty there. http://leerburg.com/ebooks/puppygroundwork.pdf
