I'd do more searching for a different vet. I agree with Michelle and Jenni on this, the vet is out for the money. And recommending stomach stapling, just as a precautionary thing, is a red flag!
Most vets will recommend you spay or neuter your dog when they are as young as 4 months old fo males and before a first heat for females(can happen between 6-8months-average).
Think about it like this: what would have happened to you if you would have had your reproductive organs removed before you hit puberty?
The hormones in the dogs reproductive organs are what aids in proper growth. A dog needs those hormones not only for physical growth, but brain development, too.
If you can't find another vet that you like, make sure you have the knowledge to back up what you want or don't want for your dog.
I had my vet tell me that there wouldn't be any adverse side effects if I were to spay my St. Bernard at 5 months old. I knew better than that. And just to be sure I asked everyone here to double check. I was right and my Saint won't be getting fixed till she's older.
I also had to tell my vet that I feed a raw diet and I only do minimal shots-she wasn't in complete agreement, but I stood my ground, because of the research I had done and the help from everyone here, and she didn't argue with me about it too much.
