My dobergirl is fed THK w/ raw supplementation, i.e. chicken qtrs, mackerel, hamburger, etc. She also gets an egg every other day, w/ some kelp, vit E & C, and also salmon oil. She is 9 months old and weighs 45lbs. She stands 22" at the shoulder. Is this normal growth pattern for a Dobe on raw? The vet has seen her several times and say she looks fine. I can feel her ribs, but cannot see them to count them. She's thin, but not skinny. Her teeth are good to go... Maybe she's just small... I don't want her to be huge, but I wanna make sure she's getting everything she needs...
Sounds like her weight is in good proportion to her height & feeling ribs without seeing them all is fine (a bit on the lean side is much healthier than a bit too heavy) -- If she's already had her first heat or been spayed, then she's very unlikely to grow any taller, so that would make her a little undersized for a Doberman, but this has nothing to do with feeding a raw diet (IMHO she just had a poor start from a questionable breeder, which isn't your fault)...
My experience with THK (Embark) is that I need to feed a lot more of it than "normal" in order for my Dobe to maintain weight.
When I fed him the Bravo Raw Diet (prepackaged frozen raw), 2 lbs. w/ RMB supplementation (usually about a 1 lb.) was enough for him to maintain his weight.
About four weeks ago, I decided to ditch the Bravo and go with THK as the base of my dog's meals. I noticed that if I did 2 lbs. of THK he lost weight and became very ribby in about a week. So then I bumped up the THK to 3 lbs. on top of the RMBs. He started to maintain his weight, but he remained very ribby, where I still could count them visually. I also noticed that the amount of stool increased by a considerable amount with THK.
So now I've switched back to 2 lbs. of Bravo, 1 lb. of THK, and 1 lb. of RMBs for about a week, and his ribs are now becoming less pronounced again. I bet that I'd have to feed 4 lbs. of THK plus the 1 lb. of RMBs to achieve the same result.
Eventually, I'd like RMBs to comprise the majority of his meals and just use THK to mix in the supplements, but I've found that I need to make the RMB transition very slowly with my Dobe; otherwise, he gets loose stools easily. It's no fun for either of us when we both need to get up every 2-3 hours at night!
