My "bei fuss" means come over to me right now and sit in front of me.
My whistle means come over to me right now and do whatever you want. No particular position is required but stay at my feet.
I think it's important to have one of your commands require the dog to sit upon returning to you. Just my opinion but it affords more control. My dog is sitting up looking at me with complete attention waiting for his next command. It's helpful if there are things in the immediate area that require you to have your dog under control (kid riding a bike, dog, squirrel, you name it).
My GSD almost automatically sat at my feet when I called him over to me with the "bei fuss" command. Maybe he just prefers it when I speak to him in his native tongue .
You asked 'or is that not important?' when commanding the dog to come that it sits. It depends on the results you are training the dog for. If the dog is to be a pet more than a working dog then it may not matter to you as much. If the dog is being trained to a higher level, then it is of huge importance that a command be correctly demonstrated by the dog.
Mike, I respectfully challenge you to a mini debate . I know you are talking about opinion here with her ("then it may not matter to you as much")...I know you're not standing firm in your comments but I felt like playing devil's advocate anyway .
Even if he is to be a pet, there are so many things that go on and can go wrong on any given day that having the dog be it's most obedient self, regardless of it's role in the owner's life, is optimal. It's what goes on outside and around the dog that makes me say this...rotten kids, cats, stupid humans, aggressive off leash dogs, the list is endless. So with a command that is easy to teach like the "come and sit at my feet", I think she should be encouraged to teach this to her dog. No?
Secondly I love your stories about your dogs. Anytime you find even the remotest shred of relevancy within a thread, please post your experiences. They are oh so fun to read !
