Thank you Mike, that helps me understand the problem better. Like you, I don't want to put him under. I'm not as panicked about it as I was at first, and constant checking of the nail as well as your responses have made me feel much better about it. It now doesn't seem at all to be something a vet would have to put him under for, and with Lear there's no blood either so that's minus one concern.
I'll get my son to help hold him so the hanging nail can be cut off. I'll use the hydrogen peroxide and Neosporin ointment on it.
Just one more question if you don't mind. Did you have to do any bandaging to protect the exposed quick after cutting off the hanging nail?
