In refrence to your question/concern regarding the prong;

I dont use the prong for obiediance corrections ever!!! I use it only for inappropiate pack behaviors or destructive behaviors.

For trainning I use purely inductive methods with toys and food as primary rewards. I repeat no, correctons!

Reasons for prong at 4 months (always the dead ring):
1.) Concern for her teeth, digsetive system.

She likes to chew on rocks and has worn her puppy teeth down (2 canines). I use the dead ring to give her a correction when she goes for a rock..and it has worked.

She was picking up the rocks and holding them in her mouth, to stash them and I found 7 in her crate! Shes sly and quick.

2.) I want her to get used to the wieght and feeling.

3.) She pulls like a sled dog on the leash and other methods had little or no affect. I dont pull on her neck I let her self correct instead of her pulling and self satisfying.

I'm not comfortable with chokes and flats compared to a prong for corrections.

There alot of moose and some bears where I live and I have to know I can control her. One hoof kick and shes dead. Tough Love!

I lost a black lab to a moose kick when I was kid.
I dont want her barking and pissing off a mother moose with a calf they sometimes retaliate.

I am taking time off from work to raise my dogs and I spend every single day with them and they are very well cared for.


I appreciate your candor and concern and I take the raising of my working pups very seriously.

If it makes you feel any better, Carbon liked to chew on rocks, bricks, an iron wood stove, the fireplace and a hammer. If it was squishy in any way, he didn't want it.

His puppy teeth were literally worn down to nubs, despite my almost constant attempts to keep him away from these things. He was very clever at getting them, and extremely dedicated. A constant battle!

But by the time his puppy teeth fell out and the adult teeth came in, he had stopped the habit. Just thought I'd share that because it did worry me that he would mess up his adult teeth with this habit.

Looking back, the teeth being filed down probably saved me some blood loss during the mouthy stage!

Amber: The only part that makes me feel better is that Carbon evetually kicked his habit I hope she outgrows her rock obsession as well.

She statrted teething so I bought her a grip of cow knuclkes to destroy.

She wants to play tug so bad, but I only let her grip it and run around with the rag during recalls and long sitz/platz.

I back tie her and build her drive first and then we just work recalls with the rag as primary reward.

Wow, she's turned into gorgeous! I love that look on her face, bright and alive. And happy.

Yeah they are looking good Jason! My F litter pup has the same obsession with rocks as does Chris' pup Faust. I think it's in the genes. Gotta stay off the rock to keep the teeth!!! :-b
