My 13 week old puppy goes potty outside when I take him.
He hadn't had any accidents in a long time as I always make sure to watch him. I put him on this bed that he loves or his kennel if I cannot watch him.
Well this past weekend he pooped on the bed twice without many signs of needing to go and peed. Normally he whines or does something to tell me he has to go? But no sound at all.
The second time he pooped on his bed I caught him in the act and scolded him. But even after that - he pee'd later.
Does that mean his training is not going well and are those accidents going to be a result in training going backwards!
I also decided to pet him and give him kisses when we are outside in hopes that it will encourage him to just do it outside not inside. Will that help?
I had a foster dog that would poop on bedding...his, another dog's, or OURS! He was housetrained otherwise. It was most irritating.
I only did some cursory research on it and didn't find anything solid, so to speak , but I found some references to dogs doing that as a way of establishing territory and/or dominance. Scent is found in feces, as well as urine.
I don't know how true this theory is because it seems to me to be in opposistion to the "clean den" theory; but that was the ONLY place he'd do it...where people or other animals slept...so there had to be some reason he did it besides just needing to go. He was especially likely to do it after the bedding had just been washed, which lend some credence to the idea that he was "marking" in a fashion.
I don't know how helpful this is for you, except to say I feel your pain! He did wind up stopping the behavior, if that makes you feel any better!
my dogs had accidents like this after i "thought" they were trained. my experience was, i'm convinced, a result of me thinking "aah, that's over" when they still needed more work.
what worked well for me was going back to keeping them tethered to me at all times, and crated when they can't be. so far, so good, no accidents since.
not sure if he's tethered or crated or what from your post. if he's going on his own bed (in a crate or on a short tether), i have absolutely no idea how to fix that problem.
Well the bed is just a pillow bed that I make him lay on when I can't watch him and as an alternative to the crate where he has a blanket.
When he went on the bed it was the place I set him on and would only allow him to be since I didn't want him roaming around. It is my alternative to tethering him. I dont want to tether because he already has seperation anxiety so I didn't want to make it worse.
