I want to leave my puppy in my laundry room with his kennel (door open) during the day while I'm gone. And put a potty pad in a corner (the room is not big). This way he can go on a pad during the day and not have to hold it even if I'm only gone for 4 hours.
Then when I'm home I want him to go outside like he currently does. IS this possible to do? He's a small shihtzu/maltese. 3lbs.
i think to be honest i'd do without the training pad. how old is he? i'm pretty sure by about a year old, they can hold it for 8 hours or so as long as you're insistent on pottying before you leave/go to bed. that's not long to juggle things really.
i mean, i'm no expert, but how do you train him to not use the pad when you're home? my guess is you'd end up with a dog that's either confused about the whole procedure, or thinks that if you're not in sight he can potty where he likes. if you're really unlucky, you'll wind up with a dog sneaking off to places like behind the couch to poop, which'll be a nightmare and take far longer to break than the original housebreaking would!
i've seen smaller dogs who are litter box trained, perhaps that's an avenue you could pursue... but whatever approach you decide to use, i think consistency is key. i'd steer clear of anything that includes "but when i'm home....".
He can hold it. Teaching them to hold it it crucial to potty training so they build the muscles to hold it and the self control too. He can humanely hold it for 4 hours.
Potty pads are expensive too. Plus they seldom work and can screw up your entire potty training process you've established so far.
