I want to leave my puppy in my laundry room with his kennel (door open) during the day while I'm gone. And put a potty pad in a corner (the room is not big). This way he can go on a pad during the day and not have to hold it even if I'm only gone for 4 hours.
Then when I'm home I want him to go outside like he currently does. IS this possible to do? He's a small shihtzu/maltese. 3lbs.
This is the last resort but its better than leaving the pup in the crate so it pees and poops in the crate.
With that said too many people get lazy and use these pee pads when they are home. In that scenario they are stupid because they teach the dog to pee and poop in the house.
You should be keeping this dog in the crate when you are home or on a leash that is attached to your body. It takes a pup 3 or 4 seconds to pee.
It should not take a pup long to learn to hold it for 4 hours.
Put the dog on a raw diet - this reduces the amount a dog eliminates by a factor of 4 or 5
Yes it's possible and it is done pretty often. But, if the room is too big don't count on the dog using the pad! I would close off the area so that he only has the option to exit the crate right onto the pad to pee and then go back in. Also if there is absorbant material in the crate and/or the crate is too big for the dog then you are also looking at other problems.
I've also heard of someone using a piece of lawn sod just outside their dogs crate so that the dog got accustomed to peeing on grass.
bad idea, you are just teaching the dog its ok to P and poop in the house. I'd spend the money and get Eds your puppy eight weeks to eight months which covers crate training and house training.
Just read Brad's post, sounds like a good idea to me
