A store in out area was having a one day meat sale today and had smelt for under $1/#. I have no idea if that's a great price for smelt or not, but it's alot cheaper than most fish around here, and it looked like a good way to add some more variety to my dog's diet. So I picked up 20#. They were wild caught and have been gutted. I figured if she didn't like the fish, then we could eat it (one of the many advantages of raw - you can eat your dogs food - cooked of course ).
I gave her a couple tonight, and she liked them. So is there a best way to feed fish? Or should I just add a couple in with her meal a few times a week?
I also found out today that I may be able to get some rabbit guts from the neighbor. The things I get excited about these days
I give mine the whole fish...she eats everything...you might possibly cut off the fins but again, mine eats it all and doesn't have any problems with it. She loves it.
It's better if you feed the whole fish, guts and everything. Experts like Tom Lonsdale recommend feeding fish just once a week though. Check out this site: http://www.rawmeatybones.com
Thanks for the link! I would have prefered whole fish, but I haven't been able to find them so far. Most fish around here is at least $3-$4/# as well so I figured partial fish was better then none. The smelt were mechanicaly gutted, and some still have the heads attached. And they're tiny fish - look like little sardines.
Yeah parial fish is better than none. What you might want to do is instead of buying fish from the grocery store, try buying from wholesalers. They normally aren't gutted and are a lot cheaper. I tried it but my St. Bernard hated the fish, I didn't try it on my GSD. JUst as an example, on another thread I stated that I had just bought 100 lbs of raw food for $45.00. It's A LOT cheaper if you go to a produce store that sell whole sale. It is better on your wallet to feed RAW .
