When you vaccinate puppies under 12 wks. of age, you leave them with no immunity. Puppies that have maternal antibodies to diseases should not be vaccinated. When they are vaccinated and they still have immunity from mom (studies show that it is around 12-16 wks. of age that the maternal antibodies where off) mothers immunity cancels out the vaccine you just gave...thus leaving no immunity. Scenerios like the above really should not surprise us.
Whenever you vaccinate with live virus vaccines the disease is shed into the environment through feces.
The combo vaccine should be outlawed as far as I am concerned. It infuriates me more to see that the trend now for children vaccinations is to add more vaccines to the combo vaccine. You would think we would learn.
Where did your information come from? Everything I know about immunology would point to that statement being TOTALY FALSE. The argument against giving vaccines while the pups are covered by the mothers atibodies is that it is a waste of time. The existing atibodies react to the vaccine and it doesn't produce any add immunity by production of the puppies reaction to the vaccine.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Boy, I have read so much on vaccines that I will have to go look. I am pretty sure though it comes from Cathernie O'Driscolls book, What the Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines.
OK, here is the information and it is in Catherine's book. (pg 131).
"When, however, we vaccinate puppies who still possess maternal antibodies, what we are doing is rendering the puppy unprotected against infection. This is because the vaccine and the maternal antibody cancel one another out (as stipulated in the manufacturers data sheets)."
"C-VET (Veternary Products) markets a range of canine vaccines. Citadel 12 CPV is a freeze dried live virus vaccine for parvovirus. Despite the fact that maternal antibodies may be present in puppies until they are 16 wks. of age, C-VET advises that puppies be vaccinated with Citadel 12 CPV at between 6-9 wks. of age, with a second given when the puppy reaches 12 wks. of age. C-VETS literature carried in the NOAH Compendium of Data Sheets for Veterinary Products 1994-95 states: Ïn puppies under 12 wks. of age, high levels of maternally derived antibody may interfere with the development of active immunity to canine parvovirus."
Chad, there was no real answer to the mums illness, just " seems to have been infected by whatever the pups have " Tests showed no coccidiosis in mum or dad or the other pups and autopsy on the second pup did not show it either. What ever it was she got from cleaning her pups.
