Why do boarding kennels and doggy events require proof of vaccination?
I'm not talking about rabies, by the way. I understand why they care about rabies.
If all of the dogs at a boarding kennel are on a typical vaccination schedule and someone brings in an unvaccinated dog, what risk does the unvaccinated dog pose to the vaccinated dogs? I thought the whole point of vaccinating your dog was to keep him/her from picking up diseases from unvaccinated dogs and the environment.
I imagine the answer is so painfully obvious that I'm going to feel like an idiot when I read the answer, but it's been bugging me.
Because they could slam a lawsuit on that kennel. If I brought a dog in that was vaccinated and there was a dog that was not vaccinated and my dog ended up with a disease because of that dog (remember vaccinations are not full proof), then I could hold the kennel liable for knowing they allowed an unvaccinated animal into their facilty. I don't board my dogs therefore I don't vaccinate. But that would be one reason they ask for proof of records to cover their themselves legally.
