I agree about the yearly vaccines - I've been involved in cat rescue & heard too many horror stories about vaccines, & I think they are just as harmful to dogs. (Hey, I had reactions to shots when I was a baby, & my mom refused to get anymore; maybe I got my views on this from her)What really burns me is how they push vaccines for things like Bordatella - its rarely dangerous for adult dogs, & there's so many strains that the shot is useless!!
My question is this - what do you do about boarding kennels, training classes, etc.,that require proof of vaccinations? I have never needed to board my dogs, & I don't take them to group obedience classes (since I disagree with most of the training methods!),but when I got my older girl spayed, she was required to have everyhing, so I bought the vaccine, then read about the risks & chickened out at the last minute. I pulled the label off the bottle, stuck it to the receipt, & threw the rest away! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> But I don't know that I would ecommend this method!! The vet I knew now is much more holistically oriented, doesn't push vaccins on me, & lists all her DHPP's as 3 years (the 1st vet in our area to do this), but what about the rest of you?
What do you do about places that require vaccinations?
Simple, Bet: You get the poor dog all those shots or don't ever board, don't attend training classes that require them, don't show, etc...
Yeah, it stinks. My dogs don't get kennel cough at the kennel-they get it from the stupid bordatella shot or nasal drops. I have a two very sick family members about 600 miles away-and any time there's a close call, the dogs either camp in the car with me (when I drive) or to the kennel they go. I refused to go last time. Great option when it means missing a depressing scene, but kinda stinks if you get a chance at cheap airfare to the Bahamas...
The only thing I've ever trained in that didn't ask for proof of shots was schutzhund. My canine Good Citizen class required them all, and same with the AKC affliated training club here-and it's a hard call, because they have all the sweet equipment.
