I just took my 6 month old pup to the vet for a general checkup. Everything is great: temp, heartbeat, intestines, and body fat. Teeth are in excellent condition, and the vet remarked on this. All this after feeding RAW since 10 weeks old :-)
I was then told that I need to give her 1 pill for heartworm, once a month for life.
I bought the product, but want to check here first.
I live in south Taiwan, and we do have a major mosquito problem, and therefore heartworm.
The product I was sold is: Novartis (Sankyo) 2.5mg MILBEMYCIN OXIME
Su, this is a 3 yr old thread and you may have wanted to start your own, but I've learned that giving heartworm medicine before getting a heartworm blood test can be fatal if your dog already has heartworms. So blood test first.
I don't anything about the medication you mentioned, someone else here is sure to know.
Sarah and/or Charlie, could you confirm to Su what I posted since you're both much more knowledgeable about this. I just wanted to post quickly about the heartworm blood test first.

You're right about the blood test before giving the medication, Sandy. Although you can give the medication when the pup is younger, 6 months is the earliest you'd begin the blood testing.
Giving heartworm medication without first testing the dog CAN be fatal if they aleady have the disease.

Edit reason: Clarity
The vet gave her a blood test, an instant indicator, for heartworm and 2 others (can't remember the names, but apparently one of them can also be caught by humans).
Anyway, all is clear, no problems at all.
I am glad to hear that the pill is OK, again, thanks.
