No idea why the dog does this - from the photo he looks large enough that a no-bark collar would work on him. They work really well for separation anxiety. I cant tell you how many times I have recommended them and people write back in a couple of months and tell me they have a different dog.
The dogs find out that HEY LIFE HERE ISN'T AS BAD AS I THOUGHT.
Notice I only sell the Tri-Tronics bark collars. There are others on the market and I compare then all to a cheap suit. Their quality is questionable.
Thanks Ed, That will be my tactic if the tough love doesn't work. He is 16 weeks today and about 32 lbs.
...He sleeps in the crate fine at night in out bedroom and will eat or nap in there during the day if the door is open or closed, but if you close the latches during the day he goes bonkers...
An additional thought: it does sound like fear of separation, not necessarily hating the crate judging from what you said above. It happens when you leave...at night he's fine cause you're there. During the day he's fine with the door closed cause you're there, but when you latch the door during the day, he knows you're leaving if that's the only time you latch it.
So if latching the door is the key to his acting up (this is what I gather from your post), latch it when you're staying home and he's in the crate, with treats. He just has to get used to it like Ed said "24/7". Door latched, treat in the crate, whether you're home or not. Calm attitude on your part. When he's outside then it's play time or potty time. I feel bad for the cute little guy but you can help him through this.
I have no help to offer here ... but I have noticed that my pup likes to be right next to me most of the time, if not right on my lap. If I'm at home working at the computer then he'll just snooze at my feet. But if I'm up and moving then he is moving with me, so if I want him to get any rest, then I have to crate him.
So I'm am trying to crate him more to make sure that he is getting the rest he needs, as even when he is exhausted he will still try to keep going. Just like a kid who doesn't want to take a nap.
