Do any of you members feed "tripe" to you dogs?
My GSd & Great Dane X are fed Royal Canin Kibble and 2 packs of frozen tripe per day
They won't eat their kibble without the tripe.
On a previous thread someone mentioned feeding the tripe to their dogs still frozen!! I have always thawed it out for my dogs first. Is it safe to feed it when still frozen?I was thinking that perhaps feeding it frozen would cause tummy problems?
Another concern is that when I forget to thaw the tripe I will defrost it in the microwave and on Ed's section on BARF he says not to microwave your dogs food. Why is this?
Tripe is smelly but dogs love it

Lets try to stick with the topics or start new ones...but for now I will answer this one.
I don't feed tripe,(only because of sources being hard where I am) but I don't see a reason it would hurt them to gnaw on a block of it that was still solid. I occasionally feed my chicken still icy when I forget to pull it out of the freezer before dinner time. I hate to get into the wolf thing, but I am sure if they find a carcass in January, they don't wait for it to thaw...
The reason not to use the microwave is that even on defrost you are cooking the food. If you have ever thawed hamburger in the microwave I am sure you noticed the edges get cooked.
I just thought I'd post on this section as there was an on going discussion on feeding.
I appreciate your comments and will try to be organised in future and remember to get the stuff out of the freezer No nore microwave!
I am lucky as I can get tripe very easily here in the U.K. - there is a company in Devon I can get the tripe from- they also do frozen lamb mince and chicken mince which my dogs sometimes have as an alternative. They come in 400 gm packs and only cost £0.50 so it's reasonably priced and easy to feed (when I'm organised)

I'm the one who feeds green tripe frozen!! I'm to lazy to let it thaw out and besides it stinks so bad frozen I would rather deal w/ it frozen!!( plus less blood!!) I have my husband use a hack saw to cut 5 lb. blocks in half or I feed a whole 2 lb block of greentripe/beef mix(per dog). I also give my dogs all of the egg shells I ever use, through out the day ( breakfast, lunch or dinner)and they love them,I just throw them in their bowls cracked in half, I never grind them...I always thought that it wasn't necessary to grind them, but I'm no expert.
Funny story to add: today my kids ran to tell me that a funny little animal w/ big ears and brown legs was in my dog kennel!!??....So I looked out the window and saw a FOX!! ( mid afternoon!!) My husband had left the kennel door open when he took the dogs in yesterday, and I had fed them the green tripe yesterday. The fox was rooting around in the sawdust where they had been eating looking for any scraps!!! Talk about powerful smelling stuff!! after about 5 mins. it disappeared quietly into the woods adjacent to the kennel area
Just had to share that

That's one lucky husband! Next time mine complains about my unmentionables, I'll tell him that at least I don't make him saw green tripe with a hack saw!

BY the way, because of the fox in the kennel, and that it was time to reapply flea/tick meds, I chose to put Revolution on them as it also covers topical parasites such as mange!!! One can't be too careful.........
